soreks (Fedor Soreks) added a critique 4 months ago:

Good composition and post-processing.

The shadow across the lemon is not easy to appreciate and tends to distract. I'd disagree with Clyde about cropping and suggest including a bit more negative space in the foreground.

snaps (Dana N) added a critique 3 months ago:

I love the feel of this image and the processing to get it there. I'd love to know how you did this as it's something I've been trying to do myself. Would you mind a bit of info?

bradford (Bradford Levine) said 3 months ago:

Thanks to everyone for the great feedback on this one. Dana, this was quite easy actually - all I did was punch up the contrast pretty high and then increased the saturation. I also cropped the left side to really fill the frame - I didn't want any empty space on wither side of the image. Have a great weekend.

snaps (Dana N) added a critique 2 months ago:

Thanks Bradford...simple technique indeed!

soreks (Fedor Soreks) added a critique 3 months ago:

This was a great moment to capture but the bumblebee is not that sharp and the blurry flower in the left bottom corner is distracting. Also, the light looks flat. I've found recently that shooting at ISO 400 in bright sunlight gives good DOF and very short shutter time (1/250-1/500) which would help. This looks like an overcast day: not enough light.

HuubL added a critique 3 months ago:

I agree with Soreks. It's a nice natural composition, which could have been better with the OOF blue flower out of the background. Nevertheless, with a wing beat frequency of around 150/sec, I think the bumblebee's wings would be difficult to get really sharp.

bradford (Bradford Levine) added a critique 3 months ago:

I like this image a lot. NIce color and contrast and the bee is well-positioned. Not an easy thing to do because they move so fast. well done.

+composition
it's very nice

-focus
nothing seems to be really in focus to me

Good capture! The only critiques I'd suggest are the overcast skies in the upper left corner and half-cut H in the bottom; tighter crop on the left would help it. I like how square crop works here.

JBridges (Jim Bridges) said 3 months ago:

The funny thing is I originally had it cropped a bit more to almost entirely get rid of the H on the license plate--and I am not entirely sure why I reverted back. (I think part of it was just wanting to give the "winged lady" on the hood a bit of breathing room on the left side.)

HuubL said 3 months ago:

Great shot. I guess you applied some desaturation here. It certainly goes well with the weather. This square crop works well indeed.

charcoal (Christie LaMountain) said 1 month ago:

the cropping is perfect
i love the rain
the car seems like its almost overexposed but not...
just right.

soreks (Fedor Soreks) added a critique 3 months ago:

The sand lines is the most beautiful part of it and a half of them is in shadow. The hills in the background distract to an extent. Skies, bird, and sands would be well enough. I liked the processing: color and grain, texture.

HuubL added a critique 3 months ago:

The light on the sand waves is beautiful. The lonely gull adds a deserted feeling. Wonderful conversion!

misu (Mikhail Palinchak) added a critique 3 months ago:

This is great photo. I like B&W, tone and contrast. Bird is very cool my friend! Great image, well done!

mdellacorte added a critique 1 month ago:

Lovely image. I understand this is the new conversion with Silver Fx pro. It has much more contrast and grain. If this is how you wanted then it is OK. Personally, I prefer the other conversion which is smoother and has a wider tonal range. But either way a very nice image!

Thanks Jim. If you both feel the square format would be better here, I'll try it out one day. Problem is that this is low quality scan of a print. Cropping would degrade the (low, I admit) quality even further. I'm still using film cameras a lot and to obtain the best digitals from slides/negatives, perhaps I should buy a neg scanner.

op_perrin (Olivier Perrin) added a critique 3 months ago:

belle composition, j'aime l'espace que tu laisses en hait de la photo, cela donne une superbe profondeur, et avec en cadeau le reflet du chien, parfait

AmberDawn (Amber Sullivan) added a critique 3 months ago:

I like the lines created by the full-size (not square), makes him look impatient to get going to wherever that leads. The leash did throw me for a bit, but I too like my photos straight from the cam.

Ladybug (Lisa Ruokis) added a critique 2 months ago:

What a stunning capture ~ a very unique perspective. The reflection totally makes it for me. :)

sambhara (Michael Bogdan) added a critique 2 months ago:

I agree with soreks that you should photoshop out the leash. I don't however feel cropping is necessary as I like the lost dog in a crazy world feel it lends to....

Saludos.

soreks (Fedor Soreks) added a critique 3 months ago:

It looked very good in thumbnail; nicely composed and coloured. That said, once opened, the cables dominate the scene and distract.

boyd added a critique 3 months ago:

I agree with soreks that the thumbnail looked very good, but the full frame didn't quite deliver as expected (expectations do tend to spoil everything :0) ... I think that the composition is essentially sound, I just would have liked the deep shadow on the left to reveal a bit more detail and the highlight at the back to be toned down a touch. Very difficult lighting handled quite masterfully overall. Good stuff.

op_perrin (Olivier Perrin) added a critique 3 months ago:

avec tous ces câbles, je trouve que l'on se perd dans ton image. Cela brouille trop la rue

mrraggedyandy added a critique 2 months ago:

it's tough for me to be objective since I ride the bus line that uses those very cables on Kearny Street, but I like it. I've always felt like those cables ruin 95% of the "city" shots in SF, but here you've used them as an effect, and it works. It looks and feels chaotic.

Very cool.
Rusty vehicle?

soreks (Fedor Soreks) added a critique 3 months ago:

A nice shot lacking shadows, contrast and texture in my eyes due to flat lighting.

narnold (Noah Arnold) added a critique 3 months ago:

I really love how you captured the different colors of the rust, I also like having the different squares in the picture! Very interesting photo, good job !

AmberDawn (Amber Sullivan) added a critique 3 months ago:

I like this a lot. The colors are amazing, I like the perspective and lines too. Great job!

Very nice shot.
I like the dynamic lighting. Really adds to the feel of the shot for me!

soreks (Fedor Soreks) added a critique 4 months ago:

Interesting and strong lighting; so dynamic, in fact, that the couple creates a good tension; overall, it feels a bit blurry though.

aloha_photo (Jeff Sisemoore) added a critique 4 months ago:

Well seen and a great capture. I like the intensity of the green. It makes for a strong image. Like Clyde, a wave of nostalgia washes over me when I see this one. ...ahh to be young again.

op_perrin (Olivier Perrin) added a critique 3 months ago:

belle photo, même si j'aurais décentré la photo légèrement à gauche.

Love the vibrant sky. Really adds a feel to the whole image.

op_perrin (Olivier Perrin) added a critique 3 months ago:

je suis d'accord, un peu moins de ciel pour mieux recentrer la photo sur les ombres (qui sont vraiment superbes).

ErikUnger (Erik Unger) added a critique 3 months ago:

Very beautiful shot, but I agree with Fedor about having a little more of the shore in the shot and just a tad bit less of the sky.

citrus (mathieu) added a critique 3 months ago:

vraiment magnifique

Thea (CA Taylor) added a critique 3 months ago:

This is another amazing photo, yet I do agree that crop down a bit less sky, and your eyes are drawn to the main topic, the boat and children.

soreks (Fedor Soreks) added a critique 3 months ago:

By "blur does not look natural" I meant that the dividing line between the sharp and blurred area is too distinct; making it smoother would lead to more natural blur.

HuubL added a critique 3 months ago:

I like the idea. It's a pity though that the priest's and nun's faces are (partly) hidden.

DarcoTT (Darco TT) added a critique 3 months ago:

como te han comentado más arriba creo que habría que haber intentando que no hubiera tanta diferencia entre la zona desenfocada y la enfocada, con una transición menos brusca. Y no habría desenfocado el suelo del primer plano por estar a la altura de las figuras enfocadas.

La idea es muy buena y el resultado no es malo a pesar de lo que te he dicho ;)

op_perrin (Olivier Perrin) added a critique 3 months ago:

l'idée est bonne, mais j'aurais flouté toute l'image autour des personnages, cela fait bizarre qu'une partie ne soit pas floutée

JBridges (Jim Bridges) added a critique 3 months ago:

I agree with soreks. The composition is interesting (although more faces would be nice), but the applied blur doesn't look right, both because of how "sudden" it is, but also that there are elements down the street (cars, for example) that are more in focus than the woman walking on the left side, despite being clearly further in the background. I think that is more the problem with how the blur has been applied here.
