Sounds like you went to a lot of effort to create this image, Mike. It was well worth the effort because the colour and composition here is very striking. Well conceived and executed.

I really like the colors and composition on this photo. I know very little about photo editing, so not sure what all you did - but good job!

All that was done is the properly exposed portion of each frame is selected then masked so that only the correctly exposed portion is shown.
this is done with multiple layers until you get a result such as the above.

Blended using gimp, then slightly tweaked for color and contrast.
