I really like the photo - it makes you want to know more about the person. maybe more crop?

dcannaday added a critique 1 year ago:

Lovely photo.. but I would also suggest cropping the table all together.

mikeock (Mike Adams) said 1 year ago:

If i crop on the right, the subject is to centered.
This is not appealing from a composition standpoint.

Suggestions would be appreciated.

muensterpixel (Heiko Schreckenberg) added a critique 1 year ago:

I like the table as it gives the wohle scene a bit more ease. Maybe you could have played with the aperture to get the background less sharp - but maybe this is what you didn't want at all...

mikeock (Mike Adams) said 1 year ago:

muensterpixel,

After taking these i realized where the aperture was set and how i could have enhanced this shot.
I am still learning the portrait aspect and have been thinking that is the next thing to try with these shots..

This was shot through my window and through the blinds.
The window has not been cleaned from the outside in a long time.

paddlepunk (Holger Neu) added a critique 1 year ago:

wow you must have a dirty window... but good shot

mikeock (Mike Adams) said 1 year ago:

There is also a shade on the window, above it to block the sunlight, that causes really weird lighting sometimes.

Udower (Udo Weier) added a critique 1 year ago:

It`s looking very mysterious.Maybe
cropping just below the shade or you make a new photo with clean windows.

mikeock (Mike Adams) said 1 year ago:

Udower,

This is actually a crop.
there was a lot more black area before i cropped.
I appreciate the suggestion!

ryanopaz,

Thanks for the comment.
This is my Wife's uncle that was in town from Arizona.
By the time we got to the house the light was bad.
I have a few more of him but this is the best shot of his face lighting wise.

Beamer (Clyde Beamer) added a critique 1 year ago:

Did you shoot anything tighter, this is so busy, it doesn't really show the GREAT character who is your subject. I would love to see a nice tight shot that frames his hand and face.

mikeock (Mike Adams) said 1 year ago:

Beamer,
No I don't have a tighter shot with decent lighting.
there is enough resolution that I may be able to crop this tighter to achieve the same effect.

NightMaiden (Diana Donahoo) added a critique 1 year ago:

I love the backgroound, I think if you crop the shot just in between the bag and the glass. I think the background gives depth and meaning to this gentleman.

lightholder (Kimberly Lightholder) added a critique 1 year ago:

The subject is wonderful, the b/w is perfect for the setting. Maybe a tiny boost in levels, just to bring out the tones a little more?

Interesting capture.....I'd like to see it with backlighting. I think it would look more powerful.

dcannaday added a critique 1 year ago:

Ooh, have to agree with the backlighting. Would make a real statement.

mikeock (Mike Adams) said 1 year ago:

diezel99 and dcannaday,
I will try to head out this weekend and see if I can time it right and see if a back lighting can be had.

I like the small Bucket on the right. Not sure about the wide angle composition, though it works good with this image.

Look for it tomorrow!

lightholder (Kimberly Lightholder) added a critique 1 year ago:

Can't wait to see the punchy version. It was my first thought as well. And maybe remove the green post? It's the only thing I find distracting it looks like it could be easily painted out... =) I love the electrical towers in the background... not sure why...

mikeock (Mike Adams) said 1 year ago:

lightholder,
I was wondering if it, the post, distracted from the composition.
IMHO it was not that bad but i will do an edit with it removed!
Depending on the weather, those electrical towers can add or negatively affect from the image that you are trying to compose.

danne (danne eriksson) added a critique 1 year ago:

mikeock: Hey! Its funny because I have been looking for a picture like this for some time now. I'm about to do a CD cover to a friend ("alternetiv" or ambient musik) and I have an idea that contains a monster truck like yours. What would you say if I borrowed your truck (or the other one with teeth)? If everything turns out good I would of cause name you as a cophotografer. There are no money involved so far but if there is I would be happy to share a part with you. Interested? mail me at dagensbild@gmail.com if you are interested. Then I can send you a skiss of my idea too.

This is the condom shop in Boise across the street from my house.
This is a new project for me, capturing the photographers capturing this sign.
I have quite a few shots now and even some older couple's posing in front of this sign!

marcouet52 (Mario Arcouette) added a critique 1 year ago:

I think in my .02 cent opinions you could have play more with the sign and their message,
like the ozone parking sign on the grass odd
or the open under close windows ect.

Beamer (Clyde Beamer) added a critique 1 year ago:

You're a little spy aren't you!! Can you shoot these any closer? Longer lens or something, I know you can't walk up on these subjects. Take this and crop to just have the guy to the big sign and sidewalk to ridgeline of the roof, much more interest in that kind of framing.

mikeock (Mike Adams) said 1 year ago:

marcouet52,
The sign actually says parking, On Broadway or around back.
I understand where you are coming from with this and will see what I can compose next time.
It's not just when they are open that I see people.
It could be 10 at night and people are still stopping.

Beamer,
The focal length on this shot was closer to my camera at max.
Adding my telephoto adapter really draws attention and reduces the FOV.
The other issue is that i am shooting from my front porch where people don't even notice me. I move i am a focal point for these people then.

I will try a crop and repost later in the day.

TerynYancey (Teryn Yancey) added a critique 1 year ago:

could have been a little closer. Maybe a different angle if possible. funny.

diezel99 added a critique 1 year ago:

What an interesting sign. For the image I think the lightinig is off.

Beamer (Clyde Beamer) added a critique 1 year ago:

Yeah, the light is definitely not on the subject... I had one like this too, you just happen upon a great sign/something...light/time-of-day is not right, but you know you will probably never see it again, so you shoot.
Maybe a fill flash would have helped this. Also, I would have cropped a little tighter north and south to focus interest more on the sign.

mikeock (Mike Adams) said 1 year ago:

Thanks for the tips.
This is actually a really cool sign.
It has been up for 50 years and the lady moves up and down on the washboard in the tub.
She was recently restored by a set of volunteers that made changes to her internal machinery to make it more standard so that it may be repaired for years to come.
She also has one outfit for each season.
The lighting is hard to work with as across the street all there is is trees. Timing is a must to get the lighting right on this.
I will re shoot some other angles when i get a chance!.

chefron (Ron Ernst) added a critique 1 year ago:

The sun must be coming from another direction sometime during day.

mikeock (Mike Adams) said 1 year ago:

chefron,
It really depends on the monitor.
Here at work it looks alright.
When you sent me the comment I was looking on my mother-in-law's PC and it just looked washed out...
Adding to my list of things to re-shoot!
