i appreciate the comment, Laurie .. but it was a bit more than a snapshot. This was taken an hour after sunset, with very little ambient light. to be able to capture the reflection of the fire on the faces, i had to get a 8-second exposure on a tripod & instruct all of them to be still for the 8-second duration :)
Cheers!

Wow the guy smiling held the smile steady for a long time!!! I think the "snapshot quality" for me was more about the composition, not the technique.

nice reflection-well captured
manickavelu (velu) added a critique 1 year ago:
very nice capture. good use of the polarizer!!
maybe a little more crop around the corner .. but i'm just being too picky :)
Laurie (Laurie) added a critique 1 year ago:
Really nicely done. There seems to be a little lens distortion, the middle of the door looks a little bloated and the gate is curved a bit.
mikko (Mikko Huotari) added a critique 1 year ago:
very good point of the topic

Hmmmm....I don't know how well this fits the theme. For a couple of reasons: 1) THe statue is very busy. 2) The statue takes up a large portion of the image.
Blumie (Sabine) said 1 year ago:
Thanks for the comment. I understand Nr. 2, even I do not know, what is small part of the image. But what do you meen with "busy"? What is a busy statue? Not that I am angry, I just want to understand, to avoid wrong things for the future.
manickavelu (velu) added a critique 1 year ago:
nothing is wrong about this image. it is very well composed & the lighting is good ... along with a nice even background.
i believe what drcphotography meant to say was that it probably doesn't fit the theme "minimalism". All the different clearly identifiable features in the statue adds to the detail & "busy-ness" of the image, rather than make it a minimalistic one.
Laurie (Laurie) added a critique 1 year ago:
This is nicely done, but there is a lot going on with the statue itself which may not make it suited to the theme. Otherwise it's a lovely image.

This is interesting, Paul. The shapes of the shadows, the textures of the different woods... that said, I think that the intensity of the color takes away from the image. A bit less saturation would, IMHO, would really support the shapes and textures, light and shadows.
adisdjapo (Adis Djapo) added a critique 1 year ago:
oh. i love this. maybe martin has a point but i like the bright color.
oneye (Rodion Kovenkin) added a critique 1 year ago:
Seems oversaturated... the shadows feels like burnt...
Eyeseethings added a critique 1 year ago:
Strange but I like the pver saturated colours . Nice shot this
manickavelu (velu) added a critique 1 year ago:
i like the composition. but i also feel that the shadows are too dark and flat.

amazing! I'm guessing you live close to this bridge :)
the fact that the subject is close to the center of the frame is bothering me a little bit .. but just a teensy bit.
did you shoot it in color & then process it as B&W? Or did you shoot it as a B&W original.
looking forward to seeing more images from you, duncan.
duncmc (Duncan McMillan) said 1 year ago:
I pass this bridge every day on my way to and from work. The image was shot in colour. Originally I was interested in the sunset colours in the sky, but I thought the mood suited a B&W treatment. I agree about the central composition. Oh well.
xzroxyzx (Valerie Casavant-Houle) said 1 year ago:
one of the best b&w i've seen so far. the composition is perfect, and you can really feel the solitude here. it looks like the world around has stopped moving. bravo :)
kufever (Yvette) said 1 year ago:
I like the cool tones of the black/white image - fits the subject very well.

Great work and well done on feature. The BW conversion is perfect . One of my faves .

hmmm... Well... (I hope this doesn't break rules) but if people wanted to see two versions of this photo next to each other they could do that here.
Laurie (Laurie) added a critique 1 year ago:
I'm thinking along the same lines as Paul. The first thing I see is the shiny spot then I kind of have to look for the focus. Although I do like the shot.
digitalchemy (A J Gunawan) added a critique 1 year ago:
I second paul and laurie, that shiny part was the first one that I spot.
manickavelu (velu) added a critique 1 year ago:
nice concept. but i would've liked it more if the point of focus is even sharper.
mikko (Mikko Huotari) added a critique 1 year ago:
nice tones but a bit too dark in the sharp parts

Well yes it`s only lines ..but a very god composion , really like this with the diagonal lines, shadows and color..
Good work here.
manickavelu (velu) said 1 year ago:
is that the shadow of your head in the shot? was that intentional.
love this image! You just got added to my contacts :)
Its-Only-Lines (Kevin Button) said 1 year ago:
I must admit that I didn't notice the shadow at the bottom until the first comment here.
It was probably the camara, as this grating had 25mm openings, so I was very low and very close.
Before anyone asks it's not sugar coated. :)
kufever (Yvette) said 1 year ago:
You got a great angle on this. Nicely done.

not sure if this image fits the "out my window" theme .. but i really like it! I think the blown highlights sort of work to give that extra little contrast.
nice!
pfeel (Phil Verges) said 1 year ago:
Thanks, velu.
At first I hesitated to upload this image, but when I read the theme description and saw "...or anything that frames the picture in the picture" I thought it should be fine.
adisdjapo (Adis Djapo) added a critique 1 year ago:
Nice loophole you found there. ;) I love the mood and the contrasts.

This might have fit better in the Out My Window topic. I am having trouble with the focus of this image. There is so much going on with the different lights and colors inside the building that it detracts from the overall image. If the focus of the image is indeed the window and view of the tree I think you could have formed a tighter composition that eliminates the colors of the wall.
I hope you will not mind me saying that I visited your website and saw many beautiful images. I don't think this one is your best work.
bioLarzen (In retreat) added a critique 1 year ago:
I agree with the above: this one does not fit this theme too much. If I look at it, it's not the lights and shadows that catch my eyes.
Otherwise I like it.
manickavelu (velu) said 1 year ago:
hi uncommondepth! I *really* appreciate this comment. I try not to post only my best images on Vazaar. I like to see what people see in my images, especially the ones I don't particularly like that much.
I really like the composition in this one. But I agree the focus on the tree is a little troubling. I'll take your advice & see how it looks if I crop it further (it is already cropped a little from the original).
Again, thanks for the comment. Cheers!

I like the coloring on this one a lot.
manickavelu (velu) added a critique 1 year ago:
nice tone. i would've liked the background to be more out of focus (wider aperture?)
inophoto (Jamie Adams) added a critique 1 year ago:
I dunno. The theme description says: '..shots that really bring out the unique character of the subject'. I'm sure he's got a cracking smile amd it might have helped the image jump to life.
For me, the focus of the image is on his eyes. The flash has darkened these and this lessens the appeal of the shot. A portrait in natural light - near a window perhaps would really do him justice.
GhostBob (Dimitri) said 1 year ago:
Thank you all for this comments. I'm new in digital photography, but I'm trying to do my best. I'll remember all your critiques to make better photo next time.
Fits the theme well. It feels a little like a snapshot though, a really wonderful snapshot full of nice memories I am sure but still a snapshot.
