There are many different layers at work here. The restaurant seems cut in half, physically as well as emotionally. And then of course there is the indoor / outdoor theme at play as well. The people are all related in that they are at this spot, yet seem completely emotionally detached from each other. The young girl working behind the counter, the other people inside, the person outside walking by in a blur, and then finally the eye lands on the couple sitting outside- and that is where the mystery of the shot comes in. What is the young lady telling the man? She has a very intense look on her face and the way he is leaning in- as though not to miss a word she is saying. What is she saying that could be so important?
