Very strong image. Almost belongs under the topic "a shot with a story" and I'm sure its a sad story. The lighting for me, is perfect. I love it.

@lolly: Yeah, your right. I had to play with the red ones a bit... Barely felt like I knew what I was doing that night.... Once the moon went into the full eclipse mode, I had to go to longer exposures and you'd be surprised how much the moon moves in 2 seconds...

lolly (lolly smits) added a critique 1 year ago:

Yes, I do! It's a bit like taking sunset cloud shots, the sky changes very quickly. At least you had a go; I certainly couldn't do it!

mrsmorunion (Tammy Runion) added a critique 1 year ago:

This is just beautiful! Just amazing!

Thanks again everyone.

This boat is a bulk carrier called the Pasha Bulker. It ran aground on Nobbys Beach in Newcastle, NSW Australia on 8th June this year. On the 8th & 9th June Newcastle had its worst weather in 35 years. Plenty of damage, some loss of life etc but this was the most talked about event.

Newcastle is a harbour city and we are used to seeing these huge ships off the coast. Just not ON the coast.

Chiffon (Lucas Botton) said 1 year ago:

Great shot. Have you use HDR rendering ?

Congrats on the feature, long time coming but still well deserved...

Yes! Wish it were one of mine ;-)

I love the sun reflected off the floor tile, the grainy feel and the deep, brooding shadows. Impressonistic I'd say.

MMeye (Martine) said 1 year ago:

Congratulations on the feature. The light is very special and the framing is excellent.

Great composition - reminiscent of days gone by. The ones make it a little foreboding almost like bad memories.

When I grow up I want to be able to make photos like this one.

Flatline (Iron Flatline) said 1 year ago:

Holy cr*p this is a great image. Could you share some technique with me - is this a straight image, or a composite (meaning HDR)? Is it tone-mapped? If it was originally digital, what B&W conversion process did you do?

Sorry to get so geeky, but I'm frustrated with my B&W process, and I want to learn....

komma5 (Christian Baron) said 1 year ago:

@all: thanks so much! :)

@flatline: i usually convert all my monochromatic images (so this) with the new b&w-function of cs3, which is amazing! it's far better than anything i used before.

it's neither an hdr nor any tonemapping popped in here, what i did was several (in this case 7) different layers with curves and tonal range adjustments over some particular areas of the image like the sky, some parts of the ship, the landscape in background and so on. i'm quite happy with the result but i'm still learning...
