@Brennan: That really depends on what type of camera you shoot with. If you shoot with a dslr that supports raw files, then shoot raw and you have a lot of control over the conversion, you can even make multiple conversions and blend them in post. If not, then see if your camera has a "backlighting" mode, sometimes that will help.

Consult some pages about HDRI photography - that's what you're looking for!
Good composition though. I think you should have moved the chair more to the left so you hadn't cut it off.
sanders (Marc Sanders) added a critique 25 days ago:
Also a cross processed look may have done the trick here. As far as HDR I would say that the window is such a small part of the overall effect that it does not need to be properly exposed unless somthing outside was so great it adds to the image like a local sign or indication like the HOLLYWOOD sign.

This definitely has that abandonment feeling
great find!

I might try to make this a bit more square by taking a bit off the bottom. Great focus.
Bastian (Bastian Löhrer) added a critique 19 days ago:
Yeah cropping it to a square should help it a lot
narnold (Noah Arnold) added a critique 17 days ago:
I agree with the cropping suggestions, I like the lighting of this photo, but I overexposure of the light on the cardboard is a little distracting, overall good job of taking an unusual scene and making it a very interesting photo!

Is the rightward tilt intentional?
I think the tilt distracts.
B&W really works here and the ice is amazing.
Pradeep (Pradeep P) added a critique 7 months ago:
Great shot. Love the treatment. The tilt doesnt bother me :)
Beamer (Clyde Beamer) added a critique 6 months ago:
I think this is more lens distortion rather than tilt. This is BTW easily corrected in PS.
CouCou33 (Ingrid) added a critique 6 months ago:
Nice capture. I really like the contrast between the frozen river and the stateless steel buildings.
Concerning the tilt, I would have straighten the picture so that the middle buildings, from each part of the river are straight instead of having the closest one straight. It would help with a smooth perspective.
snaps (Dana N) added a critique 2 months ago:
I've come across the 'tilt' problem before and wouldnt even know how to fix it. But, I think here it doesn't really take away from the photo. I like how the river takes your eye deeper into the photo.

Brennan, this explains it pretty well:

You can also take two exposures, one for the sky and one for the foreground and then blend them to achieve the same effect.
snaps (Dana N) added a critique 2 months ago:
Yes, I'd like to see inside the building! Looks interesting!
ErikUnger (Erik Unger) added a critique 2 months ago:
Yes, looks like a very interesting subject, but the overblown sky puts a damper on the picture.
boyd added a critique 2 months ago:
I like the way that you have framed this shot, and you have seen a great opportunity here (most of the battle for creating great images it would seem). The lighting does seem difficult here and the suggestions to "save your sky" would have been worth employing (but that's part of the fun of learning ;-0). Well done.

and really fits wonderfully into the topic..
great shot!

I like the two subjects here that are separated by the whole of the picture.
To me it almost shows two different worlds!
Good job!

La parte de la izquierda estropea un poco y ocupa demasiado espacio quitándole protagonismo a la rana.
Saludos.
soreks (Fedor Soreks) added a critique 3 months ago:
Good blur/sharp and black/gray contrasts, the eyes look bright.
On a critique side: a bit too much blurred stone in the background, hardly can be cropped out as the sharp area of stone will also go away. The tood's eye look a bit too centered.
GarrettHall (Garrett Hall) added a critique 3 months ago:
I agree that the toad's eyes are bit too centered. I think that cropping a bit off of the left and top will be helpful.
kseniaC (ksenia) added a critique 3 months ago:
great shot!
i love the detail on the eyes!
snaps (Dana N) added a critique 3 months ago:
I would have included less of the stone. Perhaps a different angle might have eliminated some of it while keeping most of the frog?
Great details.

You've used the light well in this image, giving this space a welcome feel to it.

Nice angle, I love the minimalis but I have some doubts on the expostion on the windows even if it is a quite difficult condition
Beamer (Clyde Beamer) added a critique 5 months ago:
I agree with most of above. My complaint is the blown out highlight. I would like to see just a little more detail in the window.
joka (Johannes Kapp) added a critique 3 months ago:
Interesting scene, good composition, fine light and shadows! Compliments!

Always like "urban decay" type shots. This one is nice, love the different colours in the pealing paint.
Beamer (Clyde Beamer) added a critique 5 months ago:
If you are to include the object at the left edge of frame, then you should explore it more. The way you have the framing, it's just distracting. There are at least 4 areas of this scene that you could explore more selectively and have better impact than this, which just comes across a bit busy.
jvgphoto (jon van gilder) added a critique 5 months ago:
I would like to see this much darker - this is a "nice" light on a subject that is not so nice!
Best,
jon
BeppeRdam (Giuseppe Moscarda) added a critique 5 months ago:
I agree with Beamer, the item on the left is a quite significative distraction.
Blown out highlights is a problem I have had on many occasions. Are there any tips you could suggest to help fix, or lessen it?
