A little soft and "candid" feeling for me to think of as a portrait. His look is great and your composition is spot on. Was this soft focus in camera or in post?

The EXIF are: ISO1250, f/3.5 and 1/30s. without tripod, so the original picture was really noisy and dark. It was taken really late at the afternoon. I had to use an aggressive treatment to reduce noise, that's why the focus is too soft.

Here's something to think about.
Start with the original image and convert it to B&W. You can use much less the noise reduction and retain most of the originals' detail.

I agree with the idea of going B&W and maybe upping the contrast some. Great composition and a like the hint of a smile on his face.

The focus is to soft for my taste.
I do like the composition,i think it is very dramatic.
