I see what you mean. Maybe I can try and dodge those textures in. I'll give it a whirl. BUt that ceiling is amazing. If you ever come out of the Wall St. station in NYC, you'll see it.

uncommondepth (Roberta Murray) added a critique 1 year ago:

I sure wouldn't want to be feeling off if I were having to walk up the stairs towards that ceiling. It is dizzying! I think the off kilter angle adds to that effect too.

I think you have captured a good range of tones in this image. The darkness of the bottom half doesn't bother me as much as the angle, and the bit of overhang at the top. I think there's so much going on in the frame it may have had more impact if the middle railing ran right up the center of the frame. But if you were aiming for an uncomfortable effect, then it's perfect as it is.

The more I think about it, the more I think I like that contrast between the bright lights on top and the darkness of the bottom. It speaks of climbing out of the darkness, and all those other cliches about finding the light.

I don't know what your level of Photoshop knowledge is, but if you do want to try to lighten the escalators or stairs, could I suggest you use a curves adjustment layer and masking instead of dodging?

Hmm..I don't think this fits the theme very well. I get the feeling of a department store opposed to a big city.

doilyboy (Martin Grey Gottlieb) said 1 year ago:

That's ok, Daniel. To me, this is the subway station at Wall St. Maybe because I know that it feels so Big City to me. The ceiling and tile work, the stone, etc... anyway, it strikes me that way which is why I posted it here. Thanks.

i like this photo-and maybe if there were more commuters on the stairs it would have felt like a bigger city-nice shot though

Wonderful depiction of the Big City -- there is always such a dichotomy of wealth and poverty, haves and have nots. Well illustrated here!

What is on the man's table? I wish I could see more of his face and hands.

Dale (Dale) said 1 year ago:

I like this but I'd of been tempted to crop it just above the dummies in the window.

ArneG (Arne Gulstene) said 1 year ago:

@ atrdallas:

He is faceless - his hands do not serve him and the items are nameless.

@ dale:

I thought of that too and in fact I tried many different crops. I ended with this one as it still kept focus on the subject - yet showed how small he really is in relation to the surroundings.

Needs to be cropped.

simonlloyd (Simon Lloyd) said 1 year ago:

Could you elaborate on your comment please?

Where and why does it need to be cropped? I suspect you'll say to take the lamp post out, but I think that would be a dull photo. I included the lamp post to anchor the shot.

The sign and lawn mower tell a good story. However, the colors are muted and the focus needs sharpening.

At last! I have always been proud of this image ever since I first took it, and I have to say it was a disappointment not seeing it get a feature, but everything comes to he who waits...
Thanks for your nice comment.
