Looks like the south side of Jumbo Rocks. The quartz monzonite had bearing veins of quartz but the pickings were scarce.
I know it's all in the time of day, but I'd love to explore the angles and curves of the place since the metal contrasts with the rock so well.

Beamer (Clyde Beamer) said 17 days ago:

@John, this is just a bit north of Barker Dam about a mile hike from that parking lot. I didn't have much time to stay, we decided to walk out there on the spur of the moment and it was looking a lot like rain, so we didn't tarry... I plan on going back again with better light and more time.

Sheer pleasure seeing this shot. Great BW tones. Nice composition.

gold-coast (Rod L'Huillier) added a critique 8 days ago:

Looks like an intriguing place. Nicely composed shot, and the only thing I would add is that the horizon seems a little high on the right and maybe crop it in a bit on the left, thats being fussy though...Great work.

Abandoned mine, isn't it?
I think you a bit overcontrsat this photo. Lights are to light and shadows are to dark. But nice place for great photos and this once as sugject, composition and so on very great!

Wow, it looks like a building I visited in 1979 while at 29 Palms (only a little less of it). It looks a little flat, I'd run the red or/and green level a bit to avoid changing the sky much.
don't miss jumbo rocks at Indian Cove or the chloride pits (very strange colors) to the west of Amboy road. or the Oasis(es) up the wash from encilas ave in 29 stumps.

HuubL added a critique 5 months ago:

Super landscape. Yes, this must be Joshua Tree NP. I visited it last year on a trip through the South West of the US.

My first impression was that the demolished building could be an old Mexican church, with the leaning electricity pole as a cross. The silhouette of the Joshua tree makes it even stronger.

I like your use of film.

360Pixels (Ayash Basu) added a critique 4 months ago:

This could be the album cover for U2's Joshua Tree, I think this is one awesome image.

Beamer (Clyde Beamer) said 4 months ago:

Well, in case they need a new one, you know the tree from the original album shoot is dead now:

Looks like early Mel Gibson - what were those movies where he was driving about in some apoc i lip stick vehicles - peter max or something? Still a favorite.

I like this one, sorta surreal!! For an alternate, more abstract framing try cropping off the left and bottom so the lower left corner is just in the negative space beyond the red ball. I did the "scroll bar crop" and liked it there. See what you think??

La iluminación mayor del techo estorba un poquito...

anemix (John Anderson) added a critique 5 months ago:

this is a great capture. I'd probably run the contrast up a bit to make the strings disappear and then try going high key on the levels adjustment to see what that affected. This is a picture that could be diced into parts for interesting results. If it were possible I'd have shifted the composition a bit to the right to eliminate the ceiling light

Very magical and wonderful shot - thanks for sharing!

Best to you,

Nice one Jon, I like all but the lens flare, looks added on?? The capture is great, the expressions are all good. The girl is really givin' you the eye!! The plywood in the upper left corner is a bit distracting.

I bet these guys are fun to listen to.

jvgphoto (jon van gilder) said 5 months ago:

I photoshopped the plywood out for the finished product - good eye, Clyde; it is distracting. The lens flare is added on - a Gimp effect - the band liked it - I presented it both ways. The girl singer had great attitude - I think she hated the whole session - the guys were really into it which helped. Why don't you photograph more live subjects - just curious.

Best,
Jon

mikeock (Mike Adams) added a critique 5 months ago:

Very cool shot.
I really like the toning here as it gives it an older feel which benefits the band, IMO.
Yeah she really is giving you the evil eye. Great way to use such things to your advantage!

I actually like the lens flair but i think that is a matter of personal preference!

anemix (John Anderson) added a critique 5 months ago:

to accentuate attitude try tightening the perspective a bit at the top to make them tower towards you in a dominating way. keep the black tears on the wall but beamer's right the plywood is a distraction.

HuubL added a critique 5 months ago:

I think this is a great group portrait of this Rock band. I like that it is in B&W/sepia, which gives it a nice classic back-to-the-seventies look. I don't know if that is what they play, but it oozes "Blood Sweat and Tears" and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.

Tiny thing is the reflection and its halo in the center.

Very interesting pictures. I like the color on the snow below each tree. How was this done? Long exposure or upping the saturation in post-processing? Or perhaps another method.

anemix (John Anderson) said 5 months ago:

The trees are coated with ice which preceded the snow and it was foggy. The halos would be a bad advertisement for blue fog lamps. The exposure was 40 seconds which is no problem at 3am in Iowa even when you're standing in the middle of the street.

I love the zebra in snow... (would really like to see a zebra against a black background). this was probably difficult to meter but I'd like to see some clarity in the eyes with a little dodging if possible.

Another great lightning capture. Amazing and beautiful.

anemix (John Anderson) said 5 months ago:

Thanks, lightning facinates me with it's unpredictable allure.

koo88 said 5 months ago:

I agree, it totally facinates me too. I have not been lucky enough to capture it. Do you think it is possible with a point and shoot?

anemix (John Anderson) said 5 months ago:

You need to be able to have shutter speed loger than 1 second, a tripod/sandbag, and most importantly, a safe place to shoot from (preferably a dry spot)- parking ramps are a good place to start. If you animate a radar site you can predict direction (sort of)but other than that it's like catching lightning in a bottle...
be prepared to take 1 or 2 hundred pictures in order to get a keeper. Even if the lighting is miles away, don't stand on a hill top holding an umbrella (sorry, had to say it)

I am constantly amazed at the similarities that we have in common with all forms of life. The network of blood vessels is fantastic and could be either like the structure of a leaf or of my own hand. I wonder if the absence of blubber requires more blood in the cold arctic waters. (I'm guessing a beluga whale)

pixelmaze (Christine Grabig) said 6 months ago:

anemix: Most definitely beluga whale, taken at the Vancouver Aquarium. In the original photo, the blood vessels were not very well defined. Which is why I *had* to make this a black and white shot. They are really quite amazing animals, and the pride of the aquarium.

Do you know the species of this hawk. I've never seen on this yellow, or is this color corrected in post. Looks like a red-tail, but the color get me thinking...?

anemix (John Anderson) said 11 months ago:

The yellow color is due to the sunset. I think we found him on his perch and he allowed me to circle him for 10 minutes and stayed there after I got back in the car and left. Red tails are common in Iowa.

Sonoma said 11 months ago:

I love the Golden hue of the sunset. The face is crisp and clear.

Very nicely done bw.
I agree that the crop is too tight so we cant "feel" the place.

APBob (Bob Eddings) added a critique 1 year ago:

These are wonderful looking buildings and your choice of black and white really lends to the old-world look. The more I study this, the more I believe the image is very well balanced (which wasn't my first impression.) There appears to be a road coming down from the right, intersecting with the road in the foreground. Both are cut off to the point of almost presenting a distraction, making me long to see more of them. That said, the bit of the wall on the lower right and the roof line of the two buildings are along the spiral that starts in the doorway and finishes in the lower left corner. Bottom line: nicely composed and/or cropped, whether intentional or a happy accident. Like the others, I'd like to see the two roads converge in the foreground thus providing a better sense of place and scale, but high marks for a very nice composition and "look," nonetheless.

diezel99 added a critique 1 year ago:

I could stare at this image for a long time.....I only wonder what a wider angle would have looked like.

dcannaday added a critique 1 year ago:

This is a very nice use of the bw. I agree with diezel as I can only wonder about what we are missing.

anemix (John Anderson) added a critique 1 year ago:

I too wanted (and want) more, but that is a why the picture is so provacative to me, it makes me yearn for details just beyond the cropping. In it's 'thousand words', the picture has obviously created a mystery which is they type of story that keeps viewers coming back.
It may just be my frame of mind but there seems to be a skeleton seen through the doorway of the rear building... the more detail I seek the more my imagination runs. this is art as I like it.
