i like the composition. but i also feel that the shadows are too dark and flat.

This is interesting, Paul. The shapes of the shadows, the textures of the different woods... that said, I think that the intensity of the color takes away from the image. A bit less saturation would, IMHO, would really support the shapes and textures, light and shadows.
