I guess I am not critiquing how you did the assignment, but the image. As a black and white image I do not find it holds my attention.

crahan (Thomas Bouve) said 11 months ago:

@Nick: which is why I appreciate your comments a lot by the way ;)

jvgphoto (jon van gilder) added a critique 11 months ago:

This is a very strong graphic in my opinion.

This is very "James Bond"-ish. It's interesting, but it seems to be missing something.

I really like the composition, the converging lines are great, and the placement of the lights as well!

However, the applied filter is not my cup of tea. It might look better in B&W, but I'm still not sure I would understand it as a choice.

photoaholic (Geoffrey Reynertz) said 11 months ago:

yes i know this filter is very "special" and i choose it only to try, usually i don't like using filters

jvgphoto (jon van gilder) added a critique 11 months ago:

I like it - nice effect. Works for me!

Best,
Jon

Nick (Nick) added a critique 11 months ago:

I do not like what you have done to this.

jellybino (Robyn Shaw) added a critique 11 months ago:

It is a very interesting photo. I agree though that the filter may be a little too harsh for my taste.

the photographer is very little in the shot but it seems to give him an incredible power, it's a very beautiful picture

Nick (Nick) said 11 months ago:

Great sense of scale.

Ben (Downing) said 11 months ago:

thanks guys! the photographer is actually 6'7" to give a little more perspective.

Beamer (Clyde Beamer) added a critique 11 months ago:

I think you mentioned the key to the question: was this image shot for an "assignment" or was this subject your choice, for your art. If for assignment, then you as the photog have to decide whether to accept the assignment. If for your art, then others may certainly question the appropriateness of your subject, happens everyday. Regardless it was your choice to post to this site, and again, others have the perfect right to question. Guns have a very different provocative mystique in the U.S. than in most other countries, so the ranges of reactions of images of guns is going to be quite ranging.

I don't find this particularly offensive, I tend to look at it as more comical. The expression of your subject is so forced as to become comical or at least contrived. Looks like it could be a movie poster for a cop spoof film. Not sure what your intent was, I don't mean denigrate your motive, just telling you how it impacts me.

crahan (Thomas Bouve) said 11 months ago:

@Beamer: thank you taking the time to clarify it so extensively. I agree completely with how people feel about guns. Even though it was an assignment, you still try as a photographer to somehow make it fit into what you have in your head as an image. Which is why I went for this setup.

As for my intention with regard to the model's expression. You're quite right that it fits a movie poster for a spoof movie quite well, although it wasn't really my intention :D Still, I'm flexible in that respect.

All of the comments above are really appreciated by the way (yours. Nick's, etc). If it weren't for people like you guys taking the time to comment I wouldn't really know how other see and what others think of my photos. So thanks! :)
Thomas

I would like to see more from this series. Did you shoot some with different expressions? Very interesting work - appreciate all the above dialogue.

Best,
Jon

photoaholic (Geoffrey Reynertz) added a critique 11 months ago:

i found this subject very interesting, the light is very good but i don't like the expression of the person he doesn't look natural

I like the stick, but I'd like less of it, and more sky and water. Moving the frame up to the bottom of the branches and adding more sky and water would make this amazing!

diamondnet (Dénes Szabó) said 11 months ago:

Thanx guys... this pic was made for an another reason of course - so not for this topic... but i think, the tree is underline the emptyness of the view, - instead it would'nt be in the picture.
Ana, i agree with the 1/3 sea - 2/3 sky version..

jvgphoto (jon van gilder) added a critique 11 months ago:

Beautiful colors and comp. - I don't think the stick in the foreground helps this photo at all - especially given the topic. What a beautiful capture of water and sky!

Nick (Nick) added a critique 11 months ago:

I find the tree very distracting.

photoaholic (Geoffrey Reynertz) added a critique 11 months ago:

i don't agree the tree is very nice and very interesting this is a great shot !!!

@jvgphoto: for me, now, it's what those books are about. I haven't got a clue, but each time I browse through my archives and come across this photo I wonder what's written inside.

Obviously it's a personal thing for me. I can perfectly understand that this image doesn't invoke anything for you. Thanks for the comment though!

erinelizzybeth (Erin) added a critique 11 months ago:

I really like this picture! The colour and the lines really caught my eye. I think the only thing that would make it better is if that volume had specific meaning. But it's ok that it doesn't. Great job!

selaux (Sarah) added a critique 11 months ago:

wow, that color is fantastic! Does that specific book number mean anything to you? Nice job making it stand out either way!

crahan (Thomas Bouve) said 11 months ago:

@selaux: I don't have a clue what the books are about, but I do wonder now that a few people asked that question :D

photoaholic (Geoffrey Reynertz) added a critique 11 months ago:

Nice composition, great blur and grain. Feels like film and that's not easy to do with a digital. Well done!

Nick (Nick) added a critique 11 months ago:

This is a little to blurry, noisy, grainy for me.

JimiThing (Jim Machajewski) added a critique 11 months ago:

This would look amazing blown up to a wall sized image. It feels like pointillism to me. The further you get away from this the more in focus it becomes. Well done.

lucianol (lucian olteanu) added a critique 11 months ago:

good!

great great shot (it would also fit to embrace the blur topic)

lasiate added a critique 11 months ago:

content de te retrouver par ici. La photo me semble un peu fouillis et si je vois ce qui a pu te plaire dans la lumière , je trouve que la photo n'arrive pas vraiment à transmettre cette émotion.

Ana (Ana Cortez) added a critique 11 months ago:

I agree with jvgphoto.... I can tell it was an amazing site, but shooting into the sun will totally rob you of your vision, unfortunately. It may help to do some darkening with the levels slider on the bottom half of this photo.

austriaka (Karin) said 11 months ago:

Thank you all for your input!
Especially thanks to jvgphoto, the sentence "The camera doesn't see as you see" is remarkable :-)

photoaholic (Geoffrey Reynertz) added a critique 11 months ago:

the place is nice but it seems like there is too much things in the shot and so it's difficult to concentrate on it

JimiThing (Jim Machajewski) added a critique 11 months ago:

I agree the spots in the sky need to go. My first thought was that this was a sunrise not a sunset. This seems like an early morning to me for some reason. There is a nice warmth to the shot overall that I really like.

Beamer (Clyde Beamer) added a critique 11 months ago:

Nice shot Nick, I agree, sunrise??? When you are cloning out the contrails, get that sensor dust spot left of center, upper third too.
