The light is nice in this but it might be more interesting to see it not so centered.

IVery dynamic. The fact that I can pick out that you've caught a ship in the horizon inspite of it being small suggests that its large enough to make an impression on me.

I love that you've caught the sun's ray's peaking out from behind the clouds. I think the photo is nicely balanced with the graduation of colors from the bright blue sky, to the golden sunlight to the pitch darkness of the fore-ground!

chaba (David Chabashvili) added a critique 1 year ago:

quite impressive sky..have to agree with the remark regarding the centered composition..also the bottom part is very dark and steals the eye from the beauty..

w3nsch1 (Thomas) added a critique 1 year ago:

i would suggest to crop the picture a little bit so the big dark area is gone. the same widht but less hight and the picture looks really nice with the sun coming trough the clouds.

I think the shadow was left in the picture for the theme "light and shadows". Therefore, I would leave it in. If it did not have the shadow, it would not fit the theme.

ian (Ian Thomson) added a critique 1 year ago:

This works for me.. As above, the shadow is for the theme and personally I think it/you are situated well in the shot..

xLeave (Boris Dozorets) said 1 year ago:

thanx Ian. yes the shadow is me

Laurie (Laurie) added a critique 1 year ago:

This definitely works. It looks like you were in the water when you shot this.

xLeave (Boris Dozorets) said 1 year ago:

2Laurie: it doesn't looks like - i was in water

Thanks. The quality of the light just made me stop and notice...

Laurie (Laurie) added a critique 1 year ago:

The quality of the light is very nice. Was this early in the morning or at the end of the day?

doilyboy (Martin Grey Gottlieb) said 1 year ago:

Thanks Laurie. It's that end of the day white winter light from the north east. The kind I miss out here in Los Angeles.

uncommondepth (Roberta Murray) added a critique 1 year ago:

Very nice light! There is dramatic contrast in the image. You get a sense of place from the cobblestone road, and the buildings. I would like to have seen more of the building on the left, where it's bathed in light, in the frame. My eye keeps going to that corner. Perhaps a slightly wider angle of view would have provided that balance my eye is wanting. Then we may also have seen the entire shadow from the FedEx truck.

Of course this could all be me thinking this looks like an interesting place, and wanting to see more of it! ;-) Overall, a nice image.

doilyboy (Martin Grey Gottlieb) said 1 year ago:

uncommondepth: thanks. I know what you mean. The shadow on the right can't compete with the light on the left.

This is nicely done. I don't see any fault with it. The lighting is good, tones are nice and the composition is well done. Good DOF too.

MomentsinTime (Pete Brennan) added a critique 1 year ago:

Very nice and I agree with Laurie that there is not much to fault on this one. If I was to nit-pick I wonder if it would be better just to black out the light stuff behind his ear.

kadenajack (Jack) added a critique 1 year ago:

Unless you were trying to place this gentleman in an airplane setting for some reason, I think you can crop out the entire right side and just concentrate on him.

Once you do that, the picture works for me just as it is.

ArneG (Arne Gulstene) added a critique 1 year ago:

This is what I see as a documentary style photograph - not so much a portrait.

Detour added a critique 1 year ago:

I spend far too long considering various crops on my own shots so in my estimation I think cropping out the entire right side here would make this a far less intersting photo.

That said, I'm not wild on the extremes of this one, from over-exposed to murky shadows, they throw me off and I end up staring at the wall in the centre.

But I think the biggest thing I'm missing here is the context. If this is a close relative, and it's a particularly memorable trip, then it's a shot eggplant has an emotional attachment to. As it is, on first view, it's not a shot I feel much connection with beyond being curious on his expression and off-camera gaze.

melissahl (Melissa Hernandez) added a critique 1 year ago:

I like this picture, and I agree with doilyboy, lighting the face more, and we'd see more of his gestures. His hand was in the right place at the right moment...I love it!

MomentsinTime (Pete Brennan) added a critique 1 year ago:

I like it. Yes, it could use some extra light on his face, but the picture makes me think..."I wonder what he is thinking about"

Great smile, love the body language and the light feeling to her personality. I wish, somehow her eyes were emphasized a little more.

MomentsinTime (Pete Brennan) said 1 year ago:

Nice shot! I covered the left part of the picture with paper on my screen to make her in the center, and I like it just a little more. I too agree that more light in her eyes would be nice. Again, nice capture!
