Wow, what a find. The textures, the pattern, the deep, muted colors - great job all around.

My poodle mix Cezanne, doing that dog thing on the road in San Diego, March 2007. I know this is silly as all giddy-up, but I couldn't resist.

This is an amazing shot. The depth and details is great, and really well done. The tone of the image is also very good.

nice B&W
it could be good to see more of this building :)
why is it a square crop?

Jens (Jens Hoffmann) said 1 year ago:

Thx!
The format is that of the Hasselblad which uses film and produces 6x6 cm images...:)

happy to read it :)
and I add that this is a great scan too !

This is probably something I've seen a hundred times and never gave it a second thought. Nicely captured.

boughey (Adrian Boughey) added a critique 1 year ago:

I personally think that the hotspot caused by the sun in the top left kills any symmetry, but I love it as a slightly unorthodox nature shot. You've done well to balance the image given the strength and position of the sun. For me the strengths of this image are it's good use of black and white and an unusual aspect. I'd normally say lose the top and bottom frame although here it accents the landscape aspect. Not sure it fits the topic but well done. Despite the apparently negative comments I like this image a lot.

MarkDM (Mark Dodge Medlin) added a critique 1 year ago:

Negative? I'd hate to think I came off that way. I like this photo, and I see the imperfect symmetry as a good thing that makes the photo more interesting. Hope this clears things up.

@MarkDM
I meant the apparently negative opening comment I had made.

defrost (Jesse Yardley) added a critique 1 year ago:

This photo is very creative! You've used a lot of negative space at the top of the frame for a very dramatic effect. I'd love to see this photo with a bit of shading in the sky (darker near the top, lighter near the horizon) to focus your eyes down to the tree even more. This could be achieved in Photoshop or with a graduated neutral density filter.

Sher (Sher Hilliard) added a critique 1 year ago:

Lovely photo bbonner. For me, I would like a closer view of the tree - for it to dominant the photo more. I am a bit distracted by the other trees.

MarkDM (Mark Dodge Medlin) added a critique 1 year ago:

You've set a great mood here - very lonely, cold and ominous-looking. I think the main tree pops out just fine, given the selective focus. The other trees add some context but are blurry enough not to get in the way.

Sher may be onto something, though, regarding those trees on the left. It would be interesting to see the trees on both edges cropped out, or maybe to see the shot as a vertical. I'm just ruminating, though - this is a very cool photo.

eggplant (Matt) added a critique 1 year ago:

I really do love the feeling here. As for the composition, I'm with Sher...I'd like to see this tree more closely (say 50%) and moved to the left of the canvas, getting rid of the other trees on the left.
But, very cool feel to this.

kamaki (Christophe) added a critique 1 year ago:

Strange feeling. I'd discentred the tree and less sky. Blur because of zooming don't distrub me (perhaps more clear on the tree).

MarkDM (Mark Dodge Medlin) said 1 year ago:

I hate to say it, but the selective blurring rubs me the wrong way. All three windows are clearly on the same plane, so to blur two of them looks too artificial. I like the tones and the quiet composition, and the bright window in the back of the building adds some great contrast. Without the blur, you'd have a really strong image.

JENRIKS (Jens & Erik) added a critique 1 year ago:

The quality is bad. There's no really sharp point or level in the image and the expoure time was too long to have the "freezed" look on the water and too short to have a foggy/silky look. Colors also aren't interesting at all. Sorry, doesn't work for me in any way.

MarkDM (Mark Dodge Medlin) added a critique 1 year ago:

There is potential here, and the composition isn't bad, with the "point" of the falls and the missile-shaped rock playing off one another. Some things to consider next time:

A longer shutter speed for a more elegant look to the water.

Cropping up a good inch to inch and a half from the bottom; there's not a lot going on below the missile-shaped rock.

I'd also come down a bit from the top; that's an awful lot of grass up there.

Finally, it looks as though your jpeg is so compressed, much of the image quality is lost. Try a less compressed version next time.

willie_901 (william) added a critique 1 year ago:

I agree with the prior comments. This is over exposed by at least 1/2 stop.

byutanner (Jason Tanner) added a critique 1 year ago:

Yeah agreed. The thumbnail looked good, but I'm disappointed with the lack of sharpness.
