@Ana, thanks for you "complement". I call your comment a complement because you found the image to be accurate representation of what this part of the forest really looked like. It was a bright sunny day, but under the oak canopy it felt dark and cool and very inviting. The California Black Oaks have a very gray bark. So yes you are right, dark and gray trees!! Oh, BTW, did you see the bright areas of sunlight landing right on the red blooming camellias??
This was taken yesterday at Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge, CA. Spring comes early to Southern California.
Beamer (Clyde Beamer) said 9 months ago:
@Jon, I tried a couple of different crops, but kept coming back to this, which is the "in-camera" faming. What do you think would work better??
jvgphoto (jon van gilder) added a critique 9 months ago:
Clyde,
I would have let that beautifully lit tree on the right function as the right hand frame. I'm sure you considered that - just a friendly suggestion.
Best,
Jon

Lucas,
Interesting subject, but the highlights are blown, and the vignette doesn't help the photo, in my opinion.
Best,
Jon

Thanks Jon and Andy for your opinions.
I'm open to other critique.
boyd added a critique 9 months ago:
Lucas, you have used the light well here and have not lost detail in the deeper shadows. I disagree that the highlights are "blown", but there is an unusual additional image around the bottom of the clock face (I am not sure if it is intentional). I also would have preferred less (or no) vignetting with this shot, it is strong enough on its own.
gazdi (Csaba Bobák) added a critique 8 months ago:
I like it, quite usual viewpoint but works here, showing the tower as strong as it is. About the vignetting I agree this is too much while I also agree there should be some to enclose the theme. One technical issue: the flat color of background makes the noise disturbing.

Yikes - it takes a minute to catch what's going on - but, it's nice that you were able to capture this.
Chiffon (Lucas Botton) added a critique 9 months ago:
Nice shot, but I dislike the right corner, there is something which hampers me

Nice image. It made me stop to look. I always enjoy images of places or scenes most people don't see everyday. I would have liked to have seen what's to the left and to the right, especially if the light dropped off dramatically. With the great stitching software today, try taking several shots and "stitch" them together to show us even more. Neat image.

Thanks again everyone.
This boat is a bulk carrier called the Pasha Bulker. It ran aground on Nobbys Beach in Newcastle, NSW Australia on 8th June this year. On the 8th & 9th June Newcastle had its worst weather in 35 years. Plenty of damage, some loss of life etc but this was the most talked about event.
Newcastle is a harbour city and we are used to seeing these huge ships off the coast. Just not ON the coast.

I think the gradients in the building is great and really stands out in the reflections and has a good impact with the perspective. I agree with Chiffon, I wouldve preferred to not have that halo around it. I think it would still be just as great without burning the sky.

Where is this?
ikol22 (Fabrizio Zanelli) said 1 year ago:
It's via Po in Torino (Italy). The photo has been taken during those "white night" feast they organize sometime in Spring. This one has been taken during a "white night" organized during Winter Olympic games. It was wonderful.
