Thanks boyd!! Great comments. I had one camera and one lens back then: Minolta SRT-101 w/ 55mm f-1.7 MC Rokkor. I shot mostly Kodachrome some Ektachrome. The slide mounts that I have scanned here don't say what film the slide is, so not sure about these two.

on a l'impression de rentrer dans un monde mystérieux, surprenant mais bonne idée.

Clyde ... this is a great lesson in how old gear with "standard" glass allows you to capture fabulous images - or it is a great add for rokkor 55mm f1.7 lenses ... thanks for reminding me that I should persist with my old OM gear to try to improve my image making rather than spending my time longing for the latest and greatest shiny digital toy ...

Hey Amber, were do you live? I grew up in Buchanan, went to college at JMU.

Just playing around a bit with some of the old slides that I scanned a couple of night ago. Sorta a happy accident thingy, what do you guys think??

definitely a happy accident thingy

j'ai beaucoup de mal avec cette photo, il y a une tres bonne idée, mais je trouve la photo trop chargé, pour moi pas lisible. mais c'est un essai, et il faut en faire pour faire des découvertes photos

Just bought a Nikon Coolscan 4000, this is one of the first old slides I scanned. This is circa 1979 taken at Lake Tahoe in California.

Great shot, Clyde. Just goes to show that some of the older gear in the right hands could/can make a pretty fearsome image. Love the detail and the depth of field from foreground to sky.

Very nice! I like old cameras. This is Real Photography! Excellent scanner result. I wish I had one.

I agree with Eye See, It really caught my eye too because of the dramatic content. Really makes you keep looking. I love it.

I too like the symbolism in this...the trees rising...the gaze pulled downward...profound silhouette.

I don't know how I missed this earlier - beautiful work - you should be proud!

Thanks all!! Hey, Ana, have you been posting anywhere lately?? Found any good new places?
Ana (Ana Cortez) added a critique 2 months ago:
Just by blog, Mister Beamer.
And that is a bit on the slow side.
So nope.
Not posting anywhere cool.
Just commenting here. I don't rate at all. It's worthless to me.
:)

Great shot. I would only crop three or four blades off of the yucca on the left side. The vertical blades aren't useful, but the rest point energy into the frame nicely.

I have a special bound with cactuses and succulents. They're the only plants which live for longer then a year at my home... :P They're Tamara-proof. I think I'll try to make something like yours of my own plants.
Thanks for sharing.
Beamer (Clyde Beamer) said 2 months ago:
I live in Southern California in one of the valleys that regularly get at or over 100 for days at a time. We just had 9 days in a row... One thing I really like is hanging baskets, but here they just won't live. A lady told me a couple of years ago to put succulents and cacti in the hanging baskets. Worked brilliantly. This spring I had to start over 'cause they had gotten so overgrown in the baskets, I had to take them and put them in pots or in the grown and start new baskets!! Give it a try.
Where do you live?
sfkp (Tamara) added a critique 2 months ago:
I live in the Netherlands, about 14 kilometers at north of Amsterdam. To get an impression of the enviroment over here: www.vazaar.com/user:sfkp/photos/id:29924/
or
www.vazaar.com/user:sfkp/photos/id:29883/
In other words: wet, sometimes sunny, sometimes not, no real winters with lang lasting snow but it freezes here a couple of days a year. 100 F or 35 degrees Celsius is max, maybe a couple of days a year. So... cactussen and succulents won't live at my balkony for a long time :)

I have to agree, this is well done. Beautiful shades of green and lovely textures. If we're playing the what I would do differently game.. I might burn in/dull down (not a lot) the highlights on the smaller green plant in the left corner. They keep dragging my eye down.. but I still dig this one :)

This is a great look-through. I like the focus created by the light and the silhouette of the statue against the clear sky in the back. Well seen.
Ana (Ana Cortez) added a critique 23 days ago:
I'd possibly do a little perspective work, by pulling out those bottom two corners?
Otherwise, this is sweetness.
JBridges (Jim Bridges) added a critique 22 days ago:
I like it. It's a good shot. Nice composition and use of the light and dark. (I was going to ask if the floor and columns in the foreground could be lightened just a tiny, tiny bit... but nix it. It's good as is.)
Beamer (Clyde Beamer) said 22 days ago:
Thanks guys this is another one converted using Nik Software's Silver FX Pro, great plugin!!
@Ana, no you are sweetness!!
boyd added a critique 15 days ago:
I agree with Jim that some out there might want to lighten the foreground ever so slightly. However, your control of light is wonderfully tight and moving from dark to bright is part of the real joy in the frame. Another image beautifully composed, well done Clyde.

Great job with this.
The detail and lighting are darn near perfect.

Very nice - I like the texture of the petals. The only thing I'd suggest is pulling back just a little - I feel the cropping is just a bit too tight.
snaps (Dana N) added a critique 21 days ago:
I agree about the cropping, but great image.
boyd added a critique 17 days ago:
Well done, Clyde. You have contolled the light here beautifully to capture all the detail. The b&w converstion works very well to create interest in the shape.
Excellently composed. I like the narrow DOF nad the dark background. It makes your subject pop out of the plane and gives it an abstract effect.
