I agree, nice one. There is a Everyday articles Topic this might work well in too.

ApurvaMadia (Apurva Madia) added a critique 15 days ago:

Shallow DOF does not work here. This is neither abstract nor still life kind of thing IMHO.

erinelizzybeth (Erin) said 14 days ago:

Thanks for the comments! This was for my school project, Shallow DOF.

To Apurva.... I would have to disagree with you. Shallow DOF is when your subject is in focus and everything in the background is out of focus. My subject in this pic is the jar of eye shadow with the doves on it and everything else is out of focus.

jKay added a critique 14 days ago:

This is a very creative image, however i think maybe you have misunderstood what Apurva is saying about the DOF not working. You are correct in defining shallow DOF and you have acheived this with your image, but i feel that Apurva is saying that this image would look better for more contect in focus from front to back. remember is all personal opinion! Good shot!

aw. that makes sense. thanks for clearing that up for me.

I really like the idea here. I'd try cropping out the two end bars and selective sharpening the web to make it more the focal point ans see how that looks. Right now the bars demand a lot of your attention when it's the web that really is the subject of interest.

The background bokeh is good - soft with just enough definition.

TheAntipodes (Menno van Zaanen) added a critique 11 months ago:

I agree with cutting the outer bars. At the moment there are too many and it makes the picture too white. The light on the web is really beautiful and the green behind it makes a nice background.

Nice bokeh, nice light, but weak compostion, in my opinion. Interesting subject, but could be a much stronger photo with a little more work.

Best,
Jon

I think the shallow depth of field on this particular photograph highlights the freckles and red hair in a beautiful way. Being blurry, the green shirt also really helps to set that off. I find myself wishing the depth of field wasn't quite so shallow, but that's just me.

Hi,

I agree with Jeff. I am wondering if this is a post-process soft focus effect. I would prefer to see the mouth in focus, but this is just my sense of a more traditional portrait photography - beyond this, it's hard to beat a beautiful mouth for adding interest to a photo.

Best,
Jon

juanantonio (J.A. Pellicer) added a critique 2 months ago:

Estoy de acuerdo con Jeff y Jon básicamente. Me parece muy interesante el efecto conseguido, en parte gracias al angulo empleado, por el cual el espectador queda atrapado en los ojos, que no ve, de la chica, como queriendo ver más. Enhorabuena. Saludos

paulpoco (Paul Poco) said 2 months ago:

For the soft focus effect, no post processing effect...I try not to do any post processing, I don't really like that and I m not good at that.
The effet is made with a 50mm wide open (1.4)
For the mouth in focus, it would mean that the nose is also in focus, and finaly all the face... and even if this photo could be great it would be, I think, a very different one... maybe I should try!

Beamer (Clyde Beamer) added a critique 2 months ago:

Nice look and feel to this one. I might have boosted the tonal range a bit, but not much. Overall really nice.

Beautiful job of getting the leaf and butterfly in focus. I agree with Jeff though that opening up even more to really throw the background out of focus would might add to the separation between the main subject and the background as well as simplifying the photo by smoothing out some of the extra elements that are competing for attention in the background. I also like the leaf coming in from the bottom right corner and moving along the bottom third. I have been just roughly playing with different crops on this photo (covering parts with my hand on the screen) and I really do like the butterfly dead center. Its harder to say but cropping up from the bottom to really put the leaf in the corner might be effective. Overall a nice shot, simplifying and separating the background would really bring it together.

Beamer (Clyde Beamer) added a critique 2 months ago:

A tighter DoF would help this a lot. It would push the background back in importance. Dodging the background a bit would help too. Looks like you may have used a diffused flash?? A wider aperture and faster shutter speed might have allowed you to use exiting light too.

boyd added a critique 2 months ago:

I generally agree with the above comments about dof etc, but I really like the framing you have used to position the subject dead centre with plenty of space around. Great work.

Grilled pineapple?? The top of the center piece is a bit blown out. Nice abstract image too.

boyd added a critique 2 months ago:

I am not so sure that the top and bottom of the image add much to the overall composition. This seems at though it might be well suited to a square crop to accentuate the abstract nature. I like the idea that you have used here.
