Jason, Too bad there's no nude reposed gracefully in the foreground ;-)

I like the tones and colors you've got here. What, to your eye, is the primary subject here? The reason I ask is because my eye follows the conveyor to the left but doesn't get to feast on where it goes.

George,

You're right. I took a series of these, just testing out a new toy and trying out some long exposures. This happens just to be the first one I edited, not necessarily the best of the series.

I posted this one to WS, and I like the overall composition and feel a bit better:

What do you think?

George added a critique 1 year ago:

I prefer the one posted on WS. Being able to view the entire conveyor keeps it all together somehow. Also, since it's a landscape orientation, I think it fits better and you can see more context, as well as the vehicles in the background. I do feel like they're both missing a primary subject, though, like maybe the foreman in the foreground with a cigarette hanging from the corner of his mouth. Of course, so often one doesn't have control over these things, so I'm in no way suggesting that you could reasonably produce such a thing.

i prefer the one on weekly shot as well,
its a much tighter composition and i agree with george on the conveyor.
although this one could be improved IMHO by cropping a bit of the ground.

I too like the WS version, but only because of the entire conveyor belt being in the shot. This one the silos are straighter. The light and colors in both are very well done. It reminds me a bit of the images of Lost America.

Well look'ee here! Congrats Jason!

Thanks George,

I really wish the one on WS would feature, but that doesn't look like it's going to happen...

Thanks everyone for their comments.

not for the right topic i guess
there's no any motion to be 'underlined' by the long exposure

I like the almost daylight colours to the front of the image, whereas the background clearly shows that it's dark outside. The green gives some alien (outerworldly) feel to it.

Really nice colors...do you mind sharing how you executed this one?

SeekingFocus (Jason Langley) said 10 months ago:

Hi Rachel,

Gladly! This was actually the VERY FIRST digital shot I took- way back in January (2007) when I got my 5D in the mail... I was on the way back from the post office dying to try it out and passed by this cement plant.

I want back and checked the EXIF for you- looks like this was 60 seconds @ f/22, ISO 800. Camera was on a tripod, with shutter release.

The lighting (colors) was just the ambient light which was present at the moment. The green was from a single bulb under the tower, which cast the eerie glow across the scene- really adds a lot in my opinion.

Thanks for the comment, hope that answers your question.
