I love this shot. The colour graduation in the sky, and the light graduation on the water are both fantastic. I bet some people will criticize the 50-50 composition, but I think in this instance, it works well.

i agree with the comment above (although i am torn on the 50-50 composition bit). the colors are amazing. i particularly like the soft water. and i think without the pieces sticking up out of the water this photo would be boring. but them dotting the foreground is actually quite nice.

simonlloyd (Simon Lloyd) added a critique 1 year ago:

More agreement from me. I like the colours and the 50-50 composition (it's not always a bad thing) but can't help wondering what the white speck in the centre of the sky is.

I also agree to the comments above. Great colors and I really like the gradiation in the sky.

Thanks for the comments everyone!

As for the 50/50 composition, I thought it was probably the best choice. Adding more of the water would have just been black on the bottom of the frame, and more of the sky would have gotten dark to the top. I thought this was the best balance.

@simonlloyd,

The white speck is the first star in the sky for the night. This photo was taken about a half hour after sunset. I thought of cloning it out, but I felt it added something, though perhaps it's lost on the smaller version.

Wonderful colors and I agree that the 50-50 composition works here. Also the star as it sits dead-center is a point of focus - my eye keeps going to it. Thanks

This is just breathtaking. The 50/50 doesnt bother me at all here. I find the balance perfect. One of the best skies I have seen in a while.

I like minimalism in scenery shots
but still - here its not the leading feature
well, nice shot
not more than

I like the minimalism. I think it could be even more minimal. With less pylons. I don't know. I'd consider getting rid of the star(?) in the sky. May gaze goes straight to it. That all said, I really like this shot. Good job.

Daniel,

Thanks for your thoughts. The more I think about it, the more I think maybe you're right about the star. It really does steal a good bit of focus... but then again, I think it adds context. So, I'm torn.

Very fine composition!

the little white spec in the sky bothers me just a bit, but other than that.. this picture couldn't be any more perfect. I love when natural things can look so smooth like this, great photo!

Thanks for the comments, leaves.

That white thing is actually the first star of the night emerging after sunset. It was removed in a later version of this and I have to say, I'm much more pleased with the shot with out the star there...

love that lone star
