Thanks Boyd, nothing done in post but crop and some tonal adjustment in curves with PS, pretty much right out of the scanner.

Very cool.
Glad to see someone else still shoots film!
Beamer (Clyde Beamer) said 1 day ago:
Full circle for me, back to the ole college days, except PS is still going to be my darkroom and my big ass HP inkjet my enlarger. Thanks for the comments guys!!
BTW, very nice used film camera are VERY cheap on eBay right now. I recently bought a pristine Nikon F100 for $165 USD!!(Some say the best film camera Nikon ever made) This camera was selling new at Samy's 2 years ago for @$750.

I'm with you on the film front, Clyde. I just don't think that an expensive digital will improve my image makeing ... and if you take your approach one step further, medium format 645s are insanely priced compared with a few short years ago and the scanned negs give plenty of scope for cropping etc ... btw, bravo again on the shot.

I don't know... but something isn't right. It feels a bit weird. The flowers are in the shade, but still they look a bit over-exposed?
The statue deffinetly doesn't add something to the scene, that's for sure. Another angle, so that the statue doesn't 'touch' the roses would be better. A square crop would help also.
Overall, it's a good subject to make photo's of it, nice low sun light. The scene does have potention!
AmberDawn (Amber Sullivan) added a critique 13 days ago:
Beautiful in black and white. Try a different angle and even lighting like Tamara said. Go back and shoot some more if you can!
narnold (Noah Arnold) added a critique 12 days ago:
I def like this photo in b&w. It brings out the soft texture of the flowers. Maybe if you moved to the left and had more of the bush in the background, maybe that would help. Beautiful capture!
Beamer (Clyde Beamer) added a critique 4 days ago:
They seem to be right Boyd, this one needs a bit of re-framing. The statue and the flowers blend together in an awkward way. A couple of steps to your left and re-shoot... go there today please! lol

Thanks for your comments everyone. It has given me some great tips for future. Might not get back there in a hurry, was shot on a weekend away in a Queensland country town (Toowoomba). Composition was difficult because I was shooting through a gap in the fence and experimenting with a new (to me!) camera.

incredible.

Cool! Is a straight-from-cam? The colour of the rose looks so bright, really nice.
AmberDawn (Amber Sullivan) said 14 days ago:
Very nice. The rosebud pops right out at you, and the star-shape behind it adds a lot of interest.
LifesMoments (Allison) said 8 days ago:
was this the only rose on the bush or just the only one alone?

beautiful colors! I really like the placement of the flower in your photograph! Great photography, keep it up :)
AmberDawn (Amber Sullivan) added a critique 14 days ago:
This photo seems very sharp and clear, I love the blue of the water especially. The composition is great. The only thing I can think to improve on is the flower looks a tad washed out by the sun - may have gotten a bit more color from the pink if it was later in the day, or used shade and a reflector for softer light.
Beamer (Clyde Beamer) added a critique 11 days ago:
This whole image is a little flat in tonal range. Do you have a raw file? If so re-convert with about a 1/2 stop underexposure and then work with the curves to pull out more range. Maybe crop just a bit tighter. I like the off-center placement of the main subject.
boyd added a critique 11 days ago:
I agree that this shot is a touch overexposed for the flower, but it is a very difficult lighting situation to control and you have done a stirling job. The composition is very strong and the colours in the leaves and water are great.

Would like to see something as more of a point of focus - the eyes aren't really sure where to look in this photo. Is focused well and dof is great.
boyd added a critique 11 days ago:
I actually like the rambling nature of the composition here. Perhaps a little more contrast to deepen the shadows at the back slightly might make the foreground details more distinctive, but this is realively minor.

I did shoot this at night. Thank you both for the crop suggestions and compliments! I love Vazaar, this is just what I've been looking for.
narnold (Noah Arnold) added a critique 14 days ago:
wow...I absolutely love the color you have captured in this photo, I usually have a hard time trying to take pictures at night so this photo is amazing for me to know that you took it at night, great job on a wonderful photo!!!
Beamer (Clyde Beamer) added a critique 11 days ago:
Very nice colors. I assume you used a flash with a diffuser?? Nicely done. I would have worked in some falloff in the back flowers they are just a little too present. You could do this with some dodging and burning in PS.
AmberDawn (Amber Sullivan) said 11 days ago:
Hey Clyde - thanks for the comments. I actually shot this with a point-and-shoot with on-camera flash, no diffuser. I am actually very surprised it came out this well. :-)
I have done very little photo editing, so not sure how to do the "falloff" you mentioned. I agree that would probably add to it. Thanks again!

Looking at both versions, I think I like this best. The space around the subject suits me better. However, I think that by shifting the center of the photo a little bit more up and left, in other words, taking the center of the flower out of the center of the photo would make it a better composition. The golden ratio... you know.

I'm not sure what you can do to improve this photo. There is a lot of noticeable noise in the sky. Try cropping it in about 10% on the left. Ideally you could expand the photo on the left to reveal the left edge of the bush and on the right so that there is some room between the fountain and the edge of the frame. I'd feel that the composition is the main issue. I take photos like this when I can see a beautiful photo in my mind's eye, but I don't have a wide enough lens. I wind up forcing all of the elements into the photo, but lose the composition that made it work in my head.
narnold (Noah Arnold) added a critique 12 days ago:
I think it would have been interesting to have the photo more focused on the couple, it seems like they are one of the only people around and it would be neat to see these two in a beautiful setting like this! What was your reason for framing the photo this way, sometimes it helps the viewer to understand your thoughts to help us interpret a photo!!

j'aime ton choix, très érotique, bien cadré, classique
Beamer (Clyde Beamer) added a critique 1 month ago:
Hi Jeff, I think I have to disagree with Olivier, I think the framing is a bit too tight, especially on the right and the bottom. I would like to see a bit more "breathing room" in this. The background seems to fight for attention some too. Maybe a little selective color correction to knock back the greens and boost the main subject a little.
aloha_photo (Jeff Sisemoore) said 28 days ago:
Thanks, Beamer. I agree with your thoughts about this one.

This is beautiful. I like the dof and lighting/focus. I do agree with Beamer's suggestions - but really a great photo!
You have used dof and light to make a great composition here, Clyde. I also love the grain :-) ... it almost looks like you have enhanced it digitally in post production ...
