I LOVE this picture. This is a Hawaiian Monk seal. They are very rare, and come up on the island of Kauai to rest after they have their meals. It is so wonderful to have someone take the time to appreciate such a beautiful creature.

I'm pretty sure this image is straight, it may not feel like it and I understand that may be more important. The spirit levels on my tripod head were level and straight. The houses have straight verticals and the bit of brighter beach that you can see near the left edge of the shot is straight. I will check the hi-res again tonight. Thanks all for the comments.

Nice golden glow. I like the arc of the water and the reflection.

Very serene feeling here. I think the whole thing about always having something in the foreground of landscapes is way overrated. This has a great feel, very nice exposure, great colors.
If you want a suggestion to possibly make it better, try cropping off about 10-15% of the top, just above the darker clouds. Might give a bit more expansive feel.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions - much appreciated as always!

Best to all,
Jon

I agree with misu here. Something is missing. Some focal point. Great colors and scene, but it all lacks that certain punch. Also, beamer may be onto something with the crop suggestion. Although I would be careful not to put the horizon in the center of the frame. That might be a bigger mistake.

Gran toma, quizá el sol un poco menos centrado...

Great landscape but I think You may do it better. I would make it more panoramic first of all! And more details on sand and woods will be also great!

Great shot - the branding is overdone, in my opinion.

Best,
Jon

This is a really beautiful shot. Well done Laura!

I agree with Beamer. Maybe move the watermark to the bottom right, if you must have it at all.

Another scan from the late 70's.

jvgphoto (jon van gilder) added a critique 2 months ago:

Clyde,

Lovely feel and work on this shot. The spacing of the gulls is great as is the exposure. Clyde, I was wondering if I might email you re: an interview I have on Monday with our local community college. My email is jon@jvgphoto.com

Thanks,
Jon

The tones that you have captured here are wonderful, Clyde. I agree with Jon that the gulls add greatly to the interest, and I love the dark water and shapes in the foreground. Go the 70's!

I'm not sure what to make of this one... it looks like a professionally lit set with a painted backdrop. Kudos on the exposure & the processing.

@Misu, thanks for you comments. There is no "noise" in this image. This is a scan of an Ektachrome slide, so what your are seeing is film "grain".

Clyde,

Great shot - a little bit too static - but that's what you get for shooting radio towers!

Best,
Jon

mrraggedyandy added a critique 2 months ago:

NIce, but you don't have any from farther up the coast at Point Montara, do you? It could be a series!

Beamer (Clyde Beamer) said 2 months ago:

No, I don't think so. Back in the day the only place I ever got to above San Fran was McKinleyville just above Eureka, if I remember right. Haven't found any from that trip even.

Nice! Did you get those colours straight from cam, or is it a pp?

It is beautiful the way it is. Only suggestion I can give: it would be fun if you shot this photo on the very moment the woman pics a shell from the sand. But maybe that's a bit nick-picking.

warreagle (Amy Warr) added a critique 2 months ago:

is that a shadow or reflection of the dog? This is excellent!

bradford (Bradford Levine) added a critique 2 months ago:

I really like the colors and the mood of this one. I might try just a slight amount of vignetting to bring a little shadow to the top right corner. Great job

Beamer (Clyde Beamer) added a critique 2 months ago:

The image is nice, the moment is there, the tonal range is nice. I just don't really like the coloring, it seems to call some attention to itself and is therefore a little distracting to me.

HuubL added a critique 2 months ago:

Very nice silhouettes. The fact that she bends over (looking for seashells, no doubt) gives it extra power. I like the gradient of light on the sea going from left to right.
