This was, until not too many years ago, DeJarnettes Hospital located in Staunton, Virginia. I seem to recall, as a child that DeJarnettes was affiliated in some way with the Western State Mental Hospital that was located a few miles from here. I believe this was (and probabably still is) owned by the State of Virginia.
I just looked it up on Google and found this interesting link: www.evilrainey.com/archives/urban_exploring/15
I guess on my next rip to my motrher's I will have to investigate more closely.

Here's another interesting link.

Appears this place was named after a pretty infamous character.

The sepia tint does lend itself to the theme emphasizing the derelict nature of the structure. The basically low-key approach also adds to this sense of abandonment.
This is just a thought: I wonder if the left part with the tree top and the side of the structure in darkness could be cropped off for a better composition further emphasizing the subject? As the guidelines below says, it's always subjective.

Thanks for your comment-i did try crop out the tree, but took out half the picture-i wish i had taken a few more shots of this :)

The thought had occurred to me too - hence the tentative note. I think it's only about a quarter of the width - an almost square format is worth experimenting with, seeing it's still being used by the die-hard professionals on the medium format cameras.
BTW fine work and it's exciting to mix travel with photographic art!

I think I miss the rest of the building.
The lower half.
Maybe a more wide angle.

The sepia really adds to the impact of this image. I too would like to see more of the building but what you did get of it is very good:)

Definitely one of my favorites in this theme. Strangely, it seems some people are living (?) in this place.
methan (András Németh) said 1 year ago:
thanks a lot, folks.
jaco, it's a simple long exposure image (how long is crucial), slightly photoshopped (curves, unsharp mask, contrast), no hdri.
bio, you're right, the only things what make this image work are the dynamics of the brighter-darker parts and the signs of inhabitedness. és ne is álmodj róla, várom a bejárónőt.
philippe, i did not check it any closer than this but i think the same. surely not the regular ikea stuff and style, but there are obvious articles for personal use.
kyramas (Nikolas Kyramarios) said 1 year ago:
very nice composition, a bit busy though.
Maybe a b&w version could be better.

Wonderful job. It would be even more remarkable if you would place a figure in the image at low opacity to give him a ghostly apperance.

Like the mood. The country close.. and far away at same time.

this is really cool. the tones and the composition of the abandoned an new architecture works very well.

Interesting image - I like the bright light and the white tones.
Huge building and nicely captured, this looks like a fascinating place to photograph.. what was it, and where is it?
